I was fortunate that she stayed home with me the first year, and my dad stayed at home the second but then it was daycare. I do remember my mom taking off work to be there for my 'big events'. It was a preschool in LA where you learned to swim. I remember my mom in her 80's power suit at the other end of the pool the first time I crossed it by myself. My mom is a very accomplished woman in a demanding, male dominated field (until she retired last year). She taught me by her example that a woman can do anything she put her mind too. I didn't really understand sexism until I was an adult. It also never occurred to me that I wasn't the absolutely most important thing in her life. That was a given. I know she had all the doubts any working mom does, but I personally feel lucky to be her daughter. She's thrilled to help out with her grandson when I go back to work part time in a few months.
