Empty. I walked through a town, all the buildings empty, still waiting for a freeway that never came. With the moon hanging low ahead of me, looking ghostly in it's own half light, I walked the main street, feeling as though I was being watched by ghosts peering from all the vacant windows, broken and gaping. Nothing looked familiar here, though the feeling I carried was. The distant thunder was the only sound, no wind, no crickets, even my foot falls made very little noise. I came upon a doll in the middle of the street, little porcelain face staring up at me through years of weathered neglect written in the marks on her face. I stood for a moment, staring at her, this strange little cast off in the middle of my personal twilight zone episode. My mind attached a voice to her, tiny and frail, pleading... "please"..."please take me with you" she whispered. For a split second, I very clearly felt a sense of dread. What if that was not my mind projecting that voice? What if it really was her? It was the kind of dread one feels when suddenly confronted by a strange dog, appearing seemingly out of nowhere and locking eyes with you, no wagging tail, perfectly still and obviously sizing you up. I took a step back and walked around her, making a point to keep my eyes on her until I had gotten well past the where she lay. I made my way further down main street, past an intersection with a blinking yellow light, the town so quiet, the ticking of it sounded like a bomb waiting to go off. I suddenly felt as if someone might be lurking near by, hanging around the edges of town.. The light kept ticking. I looked in every direction, a slow sweeping turn, scanning all the buildings, and then back to where the doll was. Tick...tick...tick.. I looked up at the moon, looming over the end of the street, beyond the edge of town lay a complete darkness, an abyss. Tick....tick.. I heard a faint thumping noise behind me. Startled, I whirled around to see you there, absent mindedly bouncing a parasol on your shoulder. You were wearing that thin summer dress I always loved, bare foot, your hair up, a vision in this light. "where are you going" you asked. At a loss for words at having you in front of me again, I barely mustered..."uh...I don't know" Tick....tick...tick...tick... You made a half turn, looking around, bouncing the frilly little umbrella on your shoulder again. "there's no where to go here"...you said flatly, turning back to face me again. "it's getting dark, this is not a good place after dark" Tick....tick.. "what does that mean?"...I knew the answer somehow. "the doll doesn't like you, she thinks you'll take me away from her....I'm her only company" No expression on your face. I looked past you for a moment, to where the doll would be, feeling the dread again. I looked back at you and hesitated....wanting to say so much, wanting to forget about these strange circumstances....yes....I DID want to take you away from here. "I love you, I WOULD take you away, if I could" ...I said. The ticking stopped, leaving a silence, the flashing yellow light had gone out at some point as I spoke the words. Was I supposed to go now?...where were you going? I asked, but thought better of it.
